Description
Untitled Stefi
Medium: Monotype on paper
Dimensions: 20 x 16
Edition: One-of-a-kind hand-printed
Untitled Stefi is an evocative monotype work that explores themes of identity, authenticity, and unapologetic self-expression. Using a paper lithography transfer of an ink-drawn self-portrait, wax, and smoke smudging, this one of a kind print confronts the viewer with an alternative version of self—raw, aggressive, and unafraid to embrace her wildness.
The background features a haunting interplay of smoke smudging and red candle wax, with the ethereal outline of lungs symbolizing both the fragility of life and the vitality found in moments of rage. Smoke envelops the lower half of the figure, evoking the suffocating pressures of societal expectations and the toxic environment created by industrial destruction. This layer speaks to the disconnection from the health and vitality of the earth, echoing a collective fury at the degradation of the natural world, a burning lament for the loss of harmony between humanity and nature due to the machine of industry and greed.
The Art of Monotype Printmaking
Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. In this case, the surface was an acrylic sheet. The image is then transferred onto a paper by pressing the two together, using a printing-press, brayer, baren or by techniques such as rubbing with the back of a wooden spoon. Most of the ink is removed during the initial pressing. Stencils, solvents, brushes, and other tools are often used to embellish a monotype print. Monotypes can be spontaneously executed and with no previous sketch.
This monotype also uses the process of paper lithography, a method of transferring original drawings with gum arabic and ink onto the surface of a monotype. I transferred one of my figurative self portrait ink drawings onto the surface of the monotype print.
Since no two impressions are the same, every monotype is a unique work of art.
- Hand-Crafted Design: The artwork is created by applying ink directly on a plate, with every detail carefully crafted by hand.
- Bold Inks & Rich Textures: The ink or paint is carefully applied to capture the depth, texture, and intricacies of the subject, which is then transferred to the paper.
- Artisan Quality: Every print is hand-pulled, making each piece one-of-a-kind with its own subtle variations in color and texture.
One-of-a-Kind – No Editions
As with all monotype prints, this artwork is a singular piece, with no editions made. Each print showcases the unique qualities and experimentation of the monotype process.
