Community Art Exchange Station
@ The Westmoreland Museum of American Art
The Community Art Exchange Station is a public art project that I was commissioned to paint for the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Located at the Park Street entrance of the museum, this interactive space invites everyone to leave and take artwork—whether it’s a small canvas, drawing, multimedia piece, or another creative expression.
For the painting design, I drew inspiration from one of my original paintings, Reaching for the Light, reflected in the lightbulbs painted inside the Station, symbolizing the warmth that community can create for each of us when we share our talents, wisdom, and gifts with one another. The birds of different feathers painted on the outside of the Station represent community unity—each unique yet contributing to a shared, vibrant whole.
Inspired by the concept of Free Little Libraries, the Museum developed the Art Exchange Station to be a place where you can share your creativity with others and discover new works to take home. The goal is to encourage artistic exchange, make art more accessible to everyone, and celebrate the diversity of our local community.
Next time you visit the museum, I encourage you to participate! Feel free to drop off a piece of art or pick one up for yourself. (The Station is meant to be a space for all ages, so we ask that any artwork left is appropriate for the entire community to enjoy.)
